Michael Jackson wasn’t only a musical genius, but an overall genius in the field of art and entertainment. Often times in the past, the entertainment industry didn’t allow a black man to express himself artistically because it took away from the perception that existed in white western society and when Michael tried to do it, the perception was that he was trying to be something he wasn’t. The problem with that system, is that Michael despite popular belief, - was a very educated man in the fields of art and history, so in 1987 when the album BAD came out, he wanted to use another cover for his album but was advised not to use it because the managers/production people felt it might hurt his image. Michael didn’t come up with the idea of lace on a picture, he had taken the inspiration from a photo taken by Edward Steichen, with the model Gloria Swanson that was shown in Vogue magazine 1924. When Edward took the photos it was all about the glamour, the mysticism, the salvage and I think that is what Michael was trying to do with the Bad album, he was showing a more raw and mysterious side of himself that had never been shown with Off The Wall or Thriller. To me it’s a shame the cover was not chosen, but I think with the Bad25 we get a truer image of Michael s intention for the Bad album and how he wanted to be viewed artistically and musically.
